Haffenreffer Private Stock (commonly referred to as Private Stock, P-Stock, Green Lightning, Heffy's , Haffen-Wrecker or The Golden Cap) is a brand of malt liquor formerly manufactured by the Falstaff Brewing Company[1] and currently manufactured by the Miller Brewing Company.[2]
It is known for its tagline "The malt liquor with the imported taste".[3] It contains 6.87% alcohol by volume, and while it is generally sold in 40- and 32-ounce bottles,[4] it is also available in six packs.
At times over the years, Private Stock has been associated with both celebrities and athletes. Wilt Chamberlain promoted Private Stock with the tagline "Nobody does it bigger.".[5] Famous rappers The Notorious B.I.G and Tupac Shakur mentioned Private Stock in their songs "Juicy" with the line "Smokin weed in Bambu, sippin' on Private Stock." and "Old School" with the words "Sippin' on that Private Stock" respectively. The beverage was a footnote to tragedy when heralded University of Maryland basketball player Len Bias purchased six packs of Private Stock at a local liquor store less than 24 hours prior to his death by cocaine overdose on June 19, 1986.[6]
One notable aspect of Private Stock packaging is that the undersides of Private Stock bottle caps contain word or Rebus puzzles.[7]
